Type Locality and Naming

North-central Qinghai. The Kubaimu Formation was named by Wang Yunshan et al. in 1980. The typical section is situated on south slope of Shiyingliang of Olongbluk Mountain in Wulan County, Qinghai Province. Lower-middle formation of Quangji Gr.

Synonym: (枯柏木组); Gubaimu Fm


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of the Kubaimu Formation is composed of grayish purple, white gray thick-bedded cobble conglomerate to boulderstone, intercalated with coarse- to medium-grained quartzose sandstone and pelitic siltstone. Upper part consists of light red, thick to very-thick-bedded medium- to coarse-grained pebbly quartzose sandstone and fine-grained sandstone, bearing large oblique beddings, symmetrical ripple marks and cross-bedding. The thickness is variable and generally is 129 to 355 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Kubaimu Formation rests conformably on the underlying Mahuanggou Fm.

Upper contact

The top disconformably underlies the overlying Shiyingliang Fm with a hiatus.

Regional extent

North-central Qinghai. It is mainly distributed from the Quanji Mountain of the north Qaidam Basin to the Olongbluk Mountain area in Qinghai Province.
